A voyage of self discovery

Race 1: Liverpool- Måløy
The fleet will sail 180nm to the race start on the north coast of Ireland, 23 July. The fleet then leaves the Outer Hebrides to their starboard and passes between the Isles of Orkney and Shetland before heading across the North Sea to Måløy. The 650nm route will offer challenging sailing over nine days.

Cruise-in-Company: Måløy - Bergen
The cruise from Måløy to Bergen will allow the fleet five days to explore the stunning Norwegian fjords. The crews can relax and call into a variety of ports with action- packed programmes, or sail with their newfound friends.

Race 2: Bergen - Den Helder
The main challenge southward will be threading the way through the North Sea oil and gas rigs and heavy maritime traffic. At the start of the eight day journey, winds are likely to be north-westerly then, as the journey continues, backing round to the south-west, making for a challenging approach to Den Helder.

How to get involved in The Tall Ships Races' 2008

  1. Registering your vessel
Tall Ships from all over the world, that fulfill the safety requirements and have a minimum 9.14 m waterline, are invited to join the race and the festivaldays on shore. For more information on registering a ship, check: www.sailtraininginternational.org
  2. Joining as a crew member
Anyone over 15 years old can become a trainee crewmember. No experience is needed, and many taking part have never set foot on a boat before. 50% of each vessel's crew must be aged between 15 and 25 years. Contact a ship in your area or join one of the big international vessels taking part in this unique event. For more information on finding a ship to join as crew, check:  www.sailtraininginternational.org
  3. Enjoy the races and festivals on shore.
Be a part of the festivaldays in ports along the route. Meet the crews and ships and celebrate our maritime routes together with the locals and visitors. The four festivals have a family profile and large maritime based programmes.
