Shanty Contest
Shanties & sea songs: This song tradition was brought forward by the first rock `n` rollers ever; the young and tough sailors from the great days of sail! Bergen will focus on giving the ship’s crew an opportunity to become more familiar with this song tradition, and hopefully encourage more shanty-singing ships in the future. Shanty contest on Monday 11 August for ships crew on live stage at the harbour, from 4pm-6pm. Fill in application here, or in captains handbook. Only first ten applications will be allowed to participate!
For officers and crew over 20 year’s
Monday 11 August from 22pm: Legendary rock pub/concert place “GARAGE” serves “Tall Ships’ Rock n’ Roll Jam”. Free entrance, preferential treatment in the queue, discount on a preselected beverage. NB: These privileges also available from Friday 08 August – Monday 11 August.
Sightseeing
Monday 11 August we invite you to take part in an interesting walking tour. Free for all crew. English speaking authorized Bergen guides will take you through the historical heart of Bergen, and give you some interesting hours in company with other sailors. Make your choice from the following options and fill in application form here or in captains handbook (NB:limited number of participants allowed):
| | | |
Sightseeing #1:Bryggen and Bergenhus, 10.00-12.00: We stroll along the world famous Bryggen, on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The ancient gables and the narrow alleyways will make you feel like stepping back in time to the era when the hanseatic merchants dominated Bergen’s trade. Hear about kings and stockfish, city fires and the hanseatics, and about Bryggen as a secret hiding place. The guide will then lead you to Bergenhus Castle and Fortress, the royal centre in the middle Ages, when Bergen was the capital of Norway and by far the largest town in the country. You will see (from the outside) both the royal stone hall Haakonshall, as well as the Rosenkrantz tower, with it’s canons pointing at the hanseatic quarter at Bryggen.
| | | |
Sightseeing #2: Bryggen and Funicular, 10.00-12.00: After a stroll along the Bryggen as mentioned above (without Bergenhus), follow the guide through the oldest street in Bergen, Upper Street, to the Funicular. You will have an exciting 6-7 minutes ride up to the top of Mount Fløien, for a magnificent panorama over the city and the surroundings. Your guide will point out the main places of interest from the view point, before you go down again to end the tour.
| | | |
Sightseeing #3: Mountain walk, 10.00-13.30: The guide will take you to the Funicular for the exciting ride up to the top of Mount Fløien where we start our mountain walk. Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains, and today we will walk on 3 of them. From Mount Fløien we walk on gravel roads, slightly upwards, for about 1,8 kms. This tour is much used of the Bergen people as their Sunday walk. But we will continue, partly on gravel road, partly on a foot path, until we reach the top of the Blueman, where you have a splendid view. We follow the path passing two small mountain waters, reaching the gravel road at the Roundman. This is the third of our 7 mountains, 568 metres above sea level. In 1912 the coast radio station Bergen Radio was established here on the top of the mountain, and the 85 metre high radio tower is still here. After enjoying a typical Bergen cinnamon roll (or whatever you like to bring) we walk down again to the Funicular Station, where you could chose to walk all the way down to the city centre or take the Funicular down again.
